Curriculum Overview

Curriculum Intent

At Airedale Infant Academy we endeavour to provide an inclusive environment ensuring children are successful learners, who are equipped with the secure foundations to lead a successful life in modern day Britain. We aim to inspire children to have high aspirations and to make positive contributions to their community. We have a bespoke social skills curriculum that ensures SMSC underpins the ethos of the school and develops pupils moral, spiritual, social and cultural understanding well.

At Airedale Infant Academy, we aim to design and provide a broad, balanced and enriched curriculum. The development is carefully planned to ensure a broad coverage and progress of all subjects from EYFS to Key Stage One. We strive to provide a sense of awe and wonder that instils a thirst for learning therefore embedded throughout the curriculum are enrichment opportunities to make learning memorable through hands on learning experiences, hooks for learning and a variety of visits and visitors. Subject leaders play an important part in the success of the curriculum by leading a regular programme of monitoring, evaluation and review.

Sport has a high profile at Airedale Infant Academy and pupils are introduced to a variety of activities. Through collaboration with Professional Sports Coaching the children are taught a wide range of skills including invasion, striking and fielding, dance, gymnastics and functional fitness. Opportunities for children to participate competitively with other schools across the district enables them to develop resilience, build confidence and team building.

Additionally Airedale Infant Academy provides extended school provision. To promote physical health and wellbeing, a range of clubs gives learners an opportunity to access a wide variety of clubs after school hours and during lunch times.

Drivers

We believe that our children deserve and need us to provide more than just the National Curriculum. Life has so much more to offer and our children have so much more to learn and experience. With this in mind we work to prioritise the things we wanted our children to experience during their time with us and below is the document which outlines our aspirations. We use these ‘drivers’ to underpin the development work we undertake in all areas of school life and to ensure our curriculum offer is enriched and personalised to our children and their families.

AmbitionAspirationsWe will support pupils in identifying and setting goals and aims so that they are always trying to achieve their full potential and be the very best that they can be; and once these goals are achieved, we will strive for more!
ResilienceWe will provide learning opportunities that present challenges and chances to work on problem-solving so that pupils develop the skills and capacity to recover quickly from difficulties, refocus on success, and manage themselves to the next success point.
CreativityWe will celebrate inventiveness, offering learning opportunities to teach, encourage, and develop pupils’ imagination, ingenuity, and innovation so that original ideas are explored and built upon and learning between subjects is used to best effect.
BraveryCourageWe will inspire pupils to engage with their learning even when they are concerned about their likely success; encouraging pupils to be of strong character and to ‘have-a-go’ at tasks, learning, and opportunities.
DeterminationWe will facilitate opportunities for pupils to work independently and with others, supporting them in developing the skills and attitudes needed to persevere and show fortitude in the face of adversity so that they can attain their goals and aims.
CuriosityWe will nurture natural curiosity; encouraging our pupils to imagine, enquire, question, and investigate so they think critically and solve problems, becoming increasingly enterprising.
RespectToleranceWe will teach and develop the ability to rationally consider different opinions and views and are willing to explore cultures rich in diversity; they see differences as an opportunity to learn and understand about the lives and cultures of others.
CommunicationWe will teach and develop the skills necessary to communicate thoughts, ideals, and feelings across a range of contexts whilst listening and considering the opinions and views of others. This will in turn equip pupils with rich vocabulary and language skills.
CourtesyWe will promote a culture where all pupils treat one another with kindness and consideration. We will teach pupils to show politeness in their attitude and behaviour towards others; good manners will be promoted and expected.

In this section you will find details of the programmes of study and curriculum content for each subject across each year group.

In EYFS and Key Stage 1 the school uses Read Write Inc to support the teaching of phonics and reading.

We strongly believe that good handwriting is an important skill for children to develop.

The teaching of Mathematics at Airedale Infant School is based on the three key aims of the National Curriculum: fluency, reasoning and problem solving. As a school, we follow a spiral curriculum which ensures that all areas of Mathematics are continually consolidated and revisited.  We aim to provide children with the ability to reason in a logical way, to recall known facts quickly and confidently so they are fluent in basic skills and to apply mathematics through problem solving in real life contexts and deeper challenges showing mastery of strands. We want to help children to see the links between maths and other subjects and deepen their understanding through investigations and applications of maths across the curriculum.

At Airedale Infants, we encourage the use of concrete objects to aid pupil understanding and incorporate them into our teaching where possible.

For details of how we teach Mathematics throughout the school and how you can support your child with this, please.

The calculation policy explains the approaches that we have to teaching addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and it shows how the methods change as children progress through the school. We hope you find this document useful in understanding how we teach children to carry out calculations.

Hey there, couldn’t help noticing you’re using Internet Explorer

That’s great and all, and we commend you for pushing through with it. Unfortunately we no longer offer support for IE; it hasn’t received a major update since 2015 and Microsoft are dropping support for it later in the year.

If you’re using Windows 10 and want to stick with a built in browser, please consider switching to Edge. Or, if you really want to enjoy the internet properly we strongly recommend downloading Google Chrome here.
